KW 078 Sunderland 16
This OO gauge kit is of Sunderland 16.
Sunderland trams 13-18 were built in 1900 by ERTCW as open top cars mounted on Brill 22E trucks. The bogies weren’t successful so in 1901 they were remounted on Brill 21E single trucks, then in 1920-22 they were rebuilt as fully enclosed cars with Brill Radiax trucks. In 1930-34 they were given 40 hp motors and retrucked as follows 14/ 15 / 18 P22, 16 Peckham P35 (later P22), 13 M&T swing link, 17 EE swing link.
Car 16 was withdrawn in 1953 then was moved to Westwood Farm, Low Warden, near Hexham, Northumberland, where it spent the next 30-odd years as a tool-shed and apple store. The body was rescued by Beamish North of England Open-Air Museum in 1989 as a potential restoration project, followed by several years’ research work, production of engineering drawings and procurement of both materials and specialist services.
No.16 was launched into service in July 2003.
The kit is to make a model of Sunderland 16 in its restored condition at Beamish.
